This past year i worked as a Technology Analyst on Mobile Technology for Community Health MoTeCH : suite of services delivered over basic mobile phones that provides relevant health information to pregnant women and encourages them to seek antenatal care from local facilities.
Here’s a video of how Motech works

We all know the story Cinderella lives with her wicked step mother and step sisters after her father dies , she is mistreated , one day a fairy god mother helps her to go to the prince’s ball she meets the prince , they fall in love , he finds her again using her glass slipper(so what!! was she the only one with that shoe size in the whole town ?) and they live happily ever after .

Now my Beef with this story
1.Cinderella was a wimp
Cinderella did stand up for herself so day in day out slaving away not complaining , wasting her life away as a maid .. and she wasn’t even getting paid . I would have given her more respect if she had run away from home and went to work for someone as a maid(at least she had the experience). This chic should have taken her life in her own hands ..
Who want a queen that cant take charge of her own life , how is she going to be a worthy partner to the prince when he becomes King ?!!!

2.What if the prince had not fallen in love with her
That was a distinct possibility after all there were many girls in the palace on that day: then she would have still remained a maid .

3.Chic didn’t even know the prince very well
how the hell do u decide to marry someone whom you just met and danced with ,no you don’t marry someone after one date do you ?
He is also quite shallow himself marrying a girl just cause she is pretty .. Dude!! didn’t they teach you anything in prince school?

4. This story gives step mothers a bad wrap , come on there some nice one’s out there .

Only part of this story i like is that she chose to forgive her step mother and sister after all that happened ;)

So i ask what did we mean to teach young girls with this story ? i know i show my version of crazy with this blog post but that’s why you all love me :)

One of the projects I worked on this past year was the Mobile Technology for Community Health MoTeCH : suite of services delivered over basic mobile phones that provides relevant health information to pregnant women and encourages them to seek antenatal care from local facilities.

So i am always interested when i find data on use of the mobile phone in relation to health .
… So I have just being reading on the Mobile phone kits to diagnose STDs in the UKwhere People who suspect they have been infected will be able to put urine or saliva on to a computer chip about the size of a USB chip, plug it into their phone or computer and receive a diagnosis within minutes, telling them which, if any, sexually transmitted infection (STI) they have.

I thought about how in Ghana West Africa could possibly borrow the concept but adapt it to our environment .
-The kits are probably to expensive for the average person to buy so we could use sms/text and it might possibly work this way :
1.we build a knowledge base of Q&A in the backend and then user can text initially to start the process
2.Then the user will be sent an SMS questions and they can answer yes or no
3.Based on their answers to those questions further questions be asked .
4.A provisional diagnosis be given to the user at the end of QA session and then they can be directed to nearest health post .
Achieves the same purpose: it gets people to health centers to seek medical care .

Anyone doing this in the African/west African region ?

“We will encourage you to develop the three great virtues of a programmer: laziness, impatience, and hubris.” — LarryWall, ProgrammingPerl (1st edition), OreillyAndAssociates

Laziness
The quality that makes you go to great effort to reduce overall energy expenditure. It makes you write labor-saving programs that other people will find useful, and document what you wrote so you don’t have to answer so many questions about it. Hence, the first great virtue of a programmer.

Impatience
The anger you feel when the computer is being lazy. This makes you write programs that don’t just react to your needs, but actually anticipate them. Or at least pretend to. Hence, the second great virtue of a programmer.

Hubris
Excessive prider. Also the quality that makes you write (and maintain) programs that other people won’t want to say bad things about. Hence, the third great virtue of a programmer.
